Introduction

Swimming dates back to the prehistoric era when it was mostly used for recreation. Competitive swimming's first big debut was at the 1896 Olympic Games and it was later recognized by the International Swimming Federation (FINA) in 1905. Since then, we have seen remarkable developments in the sport. The 100 meter freestyle, for one, has experienced great progression with a time drop of 18.89 seconds between the first World Record (1905) and the current world record for men and a 42.94 second drop for women (first world record 1908). Aside from swimsuits and the change from open water to pool, I've divided this progression into three strands: technique, training and taper.
